How Compare Kiwi works

Last updated October 2026

What Compare Kiwi is

Compare Kiwi is a marketing and introduction service. We don't provide financial advice. We're not an insurer, a KiwiSaver provider or an independent comparison website. When you ask for a check, we pass your details to one licensed New Zealand financial adviser who advises on the area you asked about.

Who gives the advice

Advice is given by a financial adviser on behalf of a Financial Advice Provider licensed by the Financial Markets Authority. You can check any adviser or provider on the Financial Service Providers Register.

Before giving you any advice, the adviser will send you their disclosure information. It covers:

  • their name, FSP number and the Financial Advice Provider they advise on behalf of
  • the types of advice they give, and the insurers or KiwiSaver providers they work with
  • how they're paid, and any conflicts of interest
  • their duties to you, and how to complain

What we compare

Insurance: life, trauma, income protection, mortgage protection, health and total and permanent disability cover from more than 8 New Zealand insurers. That isn't every insurer in the market.

KiwiSaver: fund type, fees, contributions and providers, discussed with an adviser who advises on KiwiSaver.

We don't guarantee savings. A cheaper option isn't always better: a new insurance policy can come with new exclusions or loadings, and changing KiwiSaver funds at the wrong time can lock in losses.

How advisers are paid

The check is free to you. If you take up a recommendation, the adviser may be paid by the insurer or KiwiSaver provider. For insurance, this is usually an upfront commission plus ongoing commission while the policy stays in force. Commission rates differ between providers. This creates a conflict of interest, and advisers must put your interests first. The adviser's disclosure information explains exactly how they're paid.

Replacing existing cover

Never cancel an existing insurance policy until any new cover has been accepted and you understand the differences. An adviser will only recommend replacing a policy if it's in your interests.

Complaints

If you're unhappy with Compare Kiwi, email hello@comparekiwi.co.nz and we'll respond within 5 working days.

If your complaint is about advice, the adviser's disclosure information explains their internal complaints process. It also names the free, independent dispute resolution scheme you can go to if a complaint isn't resolved.
